Balgownie
Balgownie Estate is one of Australia's greatest small vineyard estates, located near the historic gold mining town of Bendigo, 150km northwest of Melbourne in central Victoria. Balgownie Estate has also recently opened a luxurious resort and spa at their Yarra Valley Estate, including cellar door, restaurant, accommodation & spa facilities. The wines of Balgownie Estate have been renowned since the first vintage in 1972 and today they stand as benchmarks of a Central Victorian style reliant on well-ripened fruit, distinctive local terroir and sympathetic use of oak.

The two most feted wines produced at Balgownie Estate are the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, which have earned much praise from wine judges and critics over the past 30 years. Tobias Ansted - "I like good wine across a range of varieties and styles. We make wine from Bendigo and the Yarra Valley and cover a fair range of varieties. I think Cabernet is quite a challenging variety to make well, and obviously Shiraz is one of the classic challenges. The recognition we are getting for the Balgownie wines is pleasing. Being involved in rebuilding a Victorian icon has probably been the most rewarding thing in my life so far. Sue and Dave Carpenter at Lark Hill Wines are responsible for starting me on this journey, because they got me into winemaking. I grew up in Canberra and did some work experience with them and they offered me a job. They really encouraged me to go off to university and get into it."
