Penfolds
'The first name that comes to mind when you think about Australian wine.'
The Penfolds tradition, and place in history, rests with a doctor who tended his
vineyards as judiciously as his patients. Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor who migrated to Australia a century and a half ago. Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold was born in 1811, and studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, graduating in1838.
Before he left Britain he had obtained vine cuttings from the south of France and these were planted around the site of the modest stone cottage he built with his wife, Mary, at Magill on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1845. The couple called this house The Grange, after Mary's home in England.
Chief Winemaker Profile
As Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago is the custodian of a valuable winemaking heritage. A former science teacher whose love of wine led him to Roseworthy College where he graduated as Dux, Peter is only the fourth man to be entrusted with Australia's greatest wine, Grange.
Peter joined Penfolds in 1989, and its red wine Department in 1993. The Penfolds red winemaking team (Peter, Steve Lienert and Andrew Baldwin) were nominated for the 2007 Gourmet Traveller Wine Winemaker of the Year. Peter Gago was recently announced as the Big Red Winemaker of the Year 2008 in Campbell Mattinson's Big Red Wine Book.”
